Choosing the right neighborhoods that best fits you or your family as far as schools, parks, and local amenities can be a trick in any city and Salem is no exception. Naturally, as with every city, some neighborhoods have stark differences as far ascrime rates and price ranges. There are really though four zones or parts if you will of Salem. There is basically what locals refer to is as North Salem, South Salem, East Salem, and West Salem and then of course subdivisions within each area. West Salem, besides the lowlying land areas by the Willamette River and West Salem bridge leading to Dallas, are for the most part all newer. Also West Salems High School is the newest in Salem having been built less than 10 years ago. Much of North Salem was suburbia and part of the sprawl in the late 1970′s and early 1980′s continuing still to this day, to a slightly lesser degree. However, one may argue that South Salem really took over much of that urban sprawl as did West Salem beginning in the late 1990′s and I would have to say that today most of the expansion and newer subdivisions still favor that direction.
